The Extraordinary Synod on the Family is currently taking place in Rome. It is a meeting of just over 200 bishops from the whole world (only Cardinal Vincent Nichols is taking part from the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales and Archbishop Tartaglia of Glasgow is representing Scotland). The intention of this Synod is to air and reflect on the situation and problems of the family in the modern world and to prepare one year of discussion culminating in the Ordinary synod meeting in 2015, where final decisions will be made or proposals given to the Holy Father.
So we cannot expect any major decisions this week or next. And this is why I shall not be reporting in detail on the Synod myself. For day to day coverage you can hardly beat Salt and Light TV’s programmes. CEO Fr. Tom Rosica is the English-language press spokesman for the Vatican and three young reporters (for English, French and Chinese broadcasts) will be present in the Synod Hall throughout the Synod itself – this is an absolute novelty.
