St Edmund’s, Kitchener, ON, celebrates the Ascension on Ascension Thursday

Unlike the Ordinariate groups in the UK, who are following the lead of the National Calendar and celebrating the Ascension on Sunday (meaning that the Pentecost Novena, “Called to be Holy”, actually begins before the celebration of the Ascension), North American Ordinariate communities are complying with the traditional date of 40 days after Easter, thus a Thursday.

The website of St. Edmund, King and Martyr, in Kitchener, Ontario, announces:

Solemn Mass for the Ascension of Our Lord

St. Edmund’s will observe the Ascension of Our Lord on Thursday, May 14 with a Solemn Mass at 7:00 p.m. This will be the only celebration of this important feast on its traditional day in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. See the poster for details. All are welcome!

It seems a sad day when “Ascension Day to Be Celebrated Forty Days after Easter” constitutes news, but I suppose one should focus on the positive fact that there is now a church in the Kitchener-Waterloo area where that is the case.

      EPMS,

I have long been of the opinion that certain feasts (Christmas, Epiphany, Annunciation, Ascension, and All Saints) are of such great importance and so central to the mystery of salvation that they should be holy days of obligation everywhere, and never transferred from their proper days.

But that said, it really is not good for an ordinariate congregation to celebrate these feasts on different than the diocese within which it is located. This only breeds confusion, conflict, and discord — and even more so when an ordinariate community shares facilities with a diocesan parish, as most currently do.

      Norm.

As you can see here http://www.stlukesordinariate.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/May-10-2015.pdf and at other OCSP sites, Ascension Thursday is a Holy Day of Obligation in the OCSP.
