Heide Seward, Director of Evangelization Programs at St. Luke’s at Immaculate Conception, has informed us that:
The first Chrism Mass for the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter will take place on Thursday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington, DC. Our newly-ordained first bishop of the Ordinariate, The Most Reverend Stephen J. Lopes, will be the chief celebrant, and we expect a number of Ordinariate priests from around the US & Canada to attend.
A chrism mass, traditionally celebrated on Holy Thursday (usually known as Maundy Thursday in the Anglican tradition), is the Mass at which the bishop blesses the holy oils for the diocese. These are the oils used throughout the year ahead for sacramental anointing—Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination, Anointing of the Sick, etc. It is also a visible sign of the unity between diocesan priests and their bishop.
There will also be a wine & cheese reception after the Mass in the auditorium next door to Immaculate Conception.
P.S. Next month’s Ordinariate Evensong at St. Anselm’s Abbey Church is next Saturday afternoon, March 5th, at 4:00 p.m. Evensong will continue to be held at the Abbey on future First Saturdays with a reception afterwards in the Fort Augustus room in the adjoining building.
