Requiem for Sister Wendy Renate

The Mass was celebrated in the Ordinary Form by Monsignor Keith Newton. Bishop Alan Hopes of East Anglia presided and led the committal while Monsignor John Armitage, the Rector of the Shrine, spoke the homily.

Eulogies were held by Sister Renate’s sister, by Sr Jane Louise, now left alone as a Sister of Our Lady of Reconciliation, and Fr. Antony Homer, chaplain of St Thomas More Language College in Chelsea.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

Our Lady of Walsingham, pray for her.

(And of your charity please pray for Sister Jane Louise. May a whole crowd of postulants hear God’s call to join her to renew the Sisters of Our Lady of Reconciliation, not least as a memorial to Sister Wendy.)

    The funeral rites were one of the first things authorized for the Ordinariate. That they are not used even for the obsequies of a religious is a pretty poor show.

      I would concur in either of the other ordinariates.

      In the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, however, many members and congregations used the ordinary form of the Roman Rite as Anglicans — so that is their authentic patrimony — and thus continue to do so as Catholics. The Mass of Christian Burial should reflect the actual use of the decedent(s).

        I have heard variations of the same argument repeatedly. But if the British Ordinariate is exactly the same as the existing novus ordo except for where the people happened to come from, then I completely sympathize with those who say it has no point in existing at all. At this point, I am considering transferring out and being a normal Catholic in a parish that offers the Tridentine Rite.

        Clergy and religious, should (under obedience) be required to use the approved liturgy of the structure that was set up for them at considerable trouble and expense. It has an important declared purpose (acculturating cognate non-Roman tradition into the Roman church) put in motion by the Sovereign Pontiff himself. Just going on doing what you were accustomed to is the same anarchical Anglican tendency that got us into trouble in the first place.

        It is likely that these will continue to differentiate ordinariate congregations that continue to use the ordinary form of the Roman Rite within the Catholic Church from diocesan parishes for the foreseeable future.

        As to “should be required,” the apostolic constitution explicitly provides the option for each celebration within the ordinariate to use either Divine Worship or the ordinary form. And in any case, it’s important for ordinariate members to be familiar enough with the ordinary form to feel comfortable on occasions when they participate in functions of the local diocese or when they are travelling to locations where they do not have access to ordinariate congregations. This seems to require that all ordinariate congregations should use the ordinary form of the Roman Rite at least occasionally.
